Week of 1/16/12 - 1/22/12

Today the 2012 Marathon Olympic Trials were held in Houston, TX.  The top three women who will represent the United States in the 2012 Olympic games this summer all finished within 28 seconds of each other.  Shalane Flanagan came in first at 2:25:38, Desiree Davila came in second at 2:25:55, and Kara Goucher came in third at 2:26:06.  The top three men also finished close, coming in only 39 seconds apart.  Meb Keflezighi came in first at 2:09:08, Ryan Hall came in second at 2:09:30, and Abdi Abdirahman came in third at 2:09:47.  I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait until August 2012 to see our marathoners (especially Kara) take on the world!

  1. Meb is a beast. I heard he ran one of his recent marathon's with a breath rite strip accidentally left inside his shoe, rubbing his foot and causing him pain the entire race. It rubbed it so raw that he a few days later he got an infection that kept him unable to run for weeks. He still won that marathon. What a mananimal.

  2. Monday, January 16, 2012 Track Workout (from Coach Peter):

    Ladder intervals:

    #1: 1200m @ 10-15 seconds slower than 5K race pace (2-2.5 minute rest)
    #2: 800m @ 5K race pace (90 second rest)
    #3: 400m @ 30 seconds faster than 5K race pace (walk lap)

Repeat 2x for an easy workout or 3x for a tough workout

  3. Was it the breathe rite strip or the Sketchers? Anyway, he really showed what an old man can do when pushed by the youngsters. Amazing to do that at 36 years old. Would love to see if he can make it at 40. No one at the trials was over 37 years old (Michael Wardian was the oldest). Wardian also ran today's Houston Marathon and placed 14th overall in 2:31.

  4. I think I am going to do my track workout earlier since I am off tomorrow for MLK day. According to the running program I am doing, I am suppose to do 2 sets of 6 x 400s with 1:30 Rest Interval(RI) and 2:30 RI between sets.

  5. Who's up for moving the Saturday run (1/21/12) to Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning at the W&OD trail? I think the Battlefield will be a muddy mess. Let me know!

  6. It is supposed to rain through Saturday afternoon so moving the run to Sunday at the W&OD makes sense. That is rain after it stops snowing, sleeting and freezing raining. However the run needs to be in the morning on Sunday because it is supposed to rain again on Sunday afternoon.

  8. Hey all,
In case you didn't see my change above, the Saturday run is cancelled (due to weather). We will meet on Sunday at 8:00am at the W&OD trail in Vienna... with Starbucks to follow. Please let me know if you need directions!
