Week of 8/15/11 - 8/21/11

Today proved to be a great day for racing!  Peter placed 2nd overall in the 7th Annual Vibha 5K with a time of 19:12.  Keith placed 14th overall and 1st in his division in the Leesburg 10K with a time of 37:25.  Lastly, Kelly and George completed their 4th Rock 'n' Roll race of the year with half marathon times of 2:07:07.  Congratulations to everyone!

If anyone is looking for a fun race this fall, Mark stumbled across the race below.  The Run For Your Lives 5K race takes place on Saturday, October 22 in Baltimore, MD.  It's a little bit of a drive, but it could be very fun!

On a more serious note, Fresh Bikes in Arlington (formerly Conte's) has offered to host a team night for the Rogue Racers.  This would be a night where they would open the store to our team and offer a discount to all team members (including any friends and family) on bikes, components, gear, etc.  I do not have the exact details yet, but we would likely be looking at sometime in November (when next year's models are released and discounts will be the greatest).  Before we commit to something like this, I want to know if people have any interest in something like this.  In other words, does anyone need to buy anything or should we shoot for sometime later in the spring?  Please email me directly to let me know!

Schedule for this coming week:

  • Monday 8/15/11 - 6:30pm track workout at Fairfax HS
  • Tuesday 8/16/11 - 8:00-8:30pm track workout at Fairfax HS
    • check with Keith or Peter for more details
  • Wednesday 8/17/11 - 6:30pm tempo run at Fairfax Corner
  • Thursday 8/18/11 - 8:00-8:30pm track workout at Fairfax HS
    • check with Keith or Peter for more details
  • Friday 8/19/11 - OFF

Holly

  1. Been into Zombie TV lately with The Walking Dead, this dovetails nicely!

Congrats Keith on the 1st place in your AG, and can't wait to hear more on the half marathon Kelly/George.

See you around 8-8:30 at FHS tomorrow Keith.

  2. Congrats to both Peter and Keith. Great job guys.

Just an FYI, I won't be at the track tonight, but I'm thinking about doing my sprint workouts tomorrow night at the track. Wouldn't mind some company if anyone is interested.

  4. Ok, so I just watched that video and can tell you there is no way in hell that Mai will do this.

Besides for that, does anyoone think this is a bit expensive for a 5k race?

As for the team night at Fresh Bikes, I'm good for whenever. A team night sounds like it can be a lot of fun though. I probably won't be spending much money on myself, as I really need to save the money for the baby...even though I'd LOVE to buy a tri-bike. Oh well, some things are more important.

  5. It's important for a father to be fit. And you'll probably need a good bike so you can teach your kid to ride. I bet we can rationalize this ...

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dear Mark,

A father can be fit utilizing the bike he already owns, as well as, the running shoes that he was born with...his feet. Isn't that what Barefoot Bob always says??

Note that this is my first comment ever so obviously your comment compelled me to respond. :-)

  7. What if Bob and the baby ride the same size frame?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a tri-bike...but I guess it won't be until I can pass my bike onto the kid. Maybe in like 5 years.

  9. Looked at Washington Running Report and had another "oh no" moment when I see the picture of the 1st place woman. Yes, that guy just behind her is me (15th overall). I go to the gym and punish myself with a tough 8 miler on the treadmill. I then look up her PR times and see she has run a low 16's 5k and a 33:59 10k. She is a badass! I am now going to eat an ice cream sandwich. I feel better now. I also found out that 16th overall was Julia Webb. Another accomplished runner married to Alan Webb. I'm going to eat another ice cream sandwich if April didn't get to it first.

  10. For anyone interested, Mark and I will be running our sprints today at Centreville at 6:30.

  11. Did you guys see Brook's new line of minimalist shoes?

  12. The PureConnect looks like a very interesting shoe. Nice and lightweight too. I'd like to know what the drop on that sucker is. I hate the fact the bottom doesn't look to have much support on the outter edges near the midsole. I mean, minimalistic runners tend to see a lot of wear in that area, so I would assume they'd reinforce that area more than the inner part of the foot.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 4mm drop. I've had my eyes on the PureConnect for a while. My current shoes have an 11mm differential.

I stopped running in trainers several weeks ago, going to be more expensive as racers tend to wear out faster.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I get approximately 600 miles with my Kinvaras. I'm going to stick with what works.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 4mm is the same offset as the Kinvara with a road "feel" closer to that of the Minimus (in fact, with similar heel-toe drop measurements, the PureConnect looks a lot like a Brooks Minimus). I haven't run in trainers since February - minus one 18-miler in Kinvaras - so I'm excited to give the PureConnect a try, as well.

Also, the wear-out rate shouldn't bother Barefoot Bob - in the worst case, the worn out shoes will just become feet!

  16. Anything would be better than my Piranhas. I love those shoes, since they are the closest to barefoot running that I can find. But the wear on them are just horrible. I just ordered another pair from runningwarehouse so I can have it for steamtown. They are always on backorder, so hopefully they'll arrive sometime next month. If this shoe works out, I may have to get a pair myself. Don't mind the 4mm drop at all, and I love the close to ground look as well.

  17. @ keith: kinvaras are highly durable i've found as well. the progrid lite in the kinvara is one of the best cushioning system available. we've dropped eggs on progrid and they will not crack. we dropped one from 9+ feet. The egg just bounced right back up. the cortana is also a 4mm drop. and it is PLUSH (and $145)...has a new type of progrid (powergrid) infused into it.

  18. I'm interested in trying on the Brooks just to see how they feel. It would have to be something pretty amazing during the test run that would make me switch. The Kinvaras have been a major part of my training program and am now up to between 50-60 miles per week in them. I liked the feel of the Cortana but it was too heavy and at that price can't justify it. I think the Kinvara is a great every day trainer for a lighter person who doesn't need the extra cushion that the Cortana provides.

  19. On second thought my legs are insured for a cool million and that Zombie run could be a career ender. Add to that climbing a wall using only a rope? My gymnast days are long over...

  20. Anyone interested in a run? Mark, Holly, and I ended up biking yesterday, but I'm feeling somewhat good today and need to do my tempo run. Anyone else interested in running with?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, that was fun. I attempted to do my tempo run, but had to cut it short because of the crazy thunder/hail storm. Here's how it went.

Leave the house at 5:15 pm

Mile 0 - Very humid out, I hope it gets better
Mile .5 - Starting to rain, feels much better
Mile 1 - Under 8:30 warmup mile, and pouring rain now, let's keep going
Mile 1.5 - This is crazy, I'm stupid for running in this
Mile 2 - 7:27 mile, lightening, thunder, going further is probably not smart..turning around
Mile 2.5 - Nothing but more rain, lightening, thunder, this looks very bad
Mile 3 - 7:26 mile, rain is hurting now, lightening is touching the ground...HURRY HOME
    Mile 3.5 - It's straight hailing outside...GET HOME NOW
Mile 4 - 7:40 mile, HAIL HURTS BAD...I am going to die out here
Mile 4.5 - FINALLY HOME!!! Mai is waiting with a towel for me. She also took this pic. Man vs Rain...rain wins.

  22. Bob - I'm glad you made it home alive!!

  23. Running in stormy weather makes for good speedwork. Well done! I wimped out and ran on the treadmill.

  24. I'll be running the mile at the PVTC track meet this Sunday. I think it is the last meet that offers the mile until winter. There will be some track 5k races in the fall. Hope to see some milers out there.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bob, I feel your pain on the bike vs kids front. Three kids later and I'm still riding my too-small mountain bike with lame-o hybrid tires. Having said that, I'd be down for a trip to a bike shop to get measured so that I can eventually start stalking area sales.

Holly, I was wrong about last week being a pr. I set my 10 miler pr at the Army 10 back in 2004, 1:41:35. I hope to crush it in another week...if the hills in Annap don't kill me first, that is!

I'll see you all at the W&OD tomorrow. Am thinking 6 miles or so will be a good taper for next week's Annapolis 10 miler.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What is the game plan for tomorrow's run. I know the schedule says 20 miles but I'm pretty sure I will not be anywhere close to 20 (I'm thinking 8 may be the max for me, I'm still not fairing too well in heat and humidity.) Looks like it will be in the 70s tomorrow morning but pretty high humidity.

Wouldn't mind doing the 1 mile again on Sunday if others are interested. If not, I'd be up for a "recovery" bike ride as well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm planning on running 4-5 miles tomorrow. Depending on how motivated I am, I might do 6 with you, April.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Justin, we can definitely do a "recovery" ride on Sunday. If there is no rain, it may be a nice day for a bike ride.

Is everyone meeting at 7am tomorrow morning? I'm assuming the 20 milers are meeting at 7am at Vienna caboose on the W&OD.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Skipped running yesterday owing to the weather. Where exactly is everyone meeting tomorrow (red caboose 7 a.m.)? Need to do some make up miles and in the mood for a long one.

Schedule changed yet again so I'll be there at the PVTC meet filming and if the legs are reasonably fresh may give the mile a go.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Most of us don't exactly meet at the caboose, but in the parking lot behind the Vienna Inn (across the street from Whole Foods). If we take the same route we took last week (5 miles east to Falls Church, 5 miles back to the cars, 5 miles west to Herndon, and then 5 back to the cars), you might be waiting at the caboose (which is west) for a long time!

  31. Mai, I could be persuaded into shortening my run, especially if it's hot and muggy. I'm hoping to run it around a 9:30 pace, though...trying like mad to increase my speed. Ok, I can already hear some of you laughing seeing as that's your normal walking pace... :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was toying with the idea of running 5 miles tomorrow. I'm using this as a recovery week. Depending on how I feel I could be guilted into 6. I don't know what my pace will be--once again it depends on how I feel.

    ReplyDelete
  33. When you guys are done with your 20 why don't you come out to the Battlefield and run 10 more. Going to drop off the car at Koons Honda and do some trail running while they work on it. Just read the article about Badwater in the Washington Post Magazine. I really feel like a wimp when I worry about humid weather in the 80's for a 10 mile run.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's always best to run the mile on tired legs. Who's running tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bob, doing any better this evening?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I got a foam roller yesterday to try and stretch out my IT band. Spent the day icing the knee and rolling out the band. Stretching it was very painful and turned me into a hot sweaty mess. Still in pain today. May repeat everything today. Laying off the running and biking. May take Mark up on the offer to try to go see Dr Mags.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, I would see Maggs. A lot of time the ITB friction syndrome comes from weakness in the gluts and a rapid increase in distance and hills training. Keep stretching and maybe add some glut strengthening exercises to the routine.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks Peter for getting video at the mile today. The videos have been helpful for planning how to attack the mile before each race. Now I have to see where in the race I can drop 1 second.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bob,

I saw Maggs about my IT Band issue. Your biomechanics may be off a little which is contributing to it but I am sure he will recommend hip hikes and the myrtle routine. They are on his web site...

  40. Hey Keith, Been out all day, just uploading your race now. I won't have search tags on it until tomorrow but you can find it in my library. A little more challenging shooting from the stands.

Well done, 4 seconds is a good drop, almost there.
